Wooden Spoon Bar & Restaurant, Cremorne

Posted: December 30, 2012 in Cremorne, Modern Australian, North Shore, Wine Bar

I was very excited to be recently invited to sample the menu at Wooden Spoon Bar and Restaurant. Being a local to the area I was keen to check out our new addition to our parts.

On arrival we were seated along the bar area. We began by warming things with a serving of polenta fries with gorgonzola sauce and a cocktail to boot. We chose the Daim Soutar, a blend of Baileys, Frangelico, Amaretto, cocoa and cream. For all you alcoholic chocaholics out there, this can’t be beaten!

Soon after, we were taken to the restaurant area to begin our meal. I thoroughly enjoyed tearing through the zucchini flower top to get to the warm goats cheese centre. The lightly battered texture of the flower with the warm salty filling was always going to visually and physically go down well. The salad of cherry tomatoes, beans and rocket was a lovely accompaniment to offset the richness of the zucchini centrepiece.

The sizeable scallops was cooked to perfection. Juicy, plump and a nice charred skin while the bacon broke on on impact to reveal its brittle like texture.

I was a bit dubious about the peking duck dumplings. Surprisingly the filling was tasty and fleshy with the beautiful silky dumpling skin on the outside. The seafood dumpling was tasty enough but by comparison, it was the duck that had me at hello.

Both mains that were served were absolutely mouthwatering. The beef mignon was served medium coming up juicy and tender. This went down well with the earthy mushrooms and shiraz sauce where you constantly mopped up the sauce for seconds and thirds. The melt in your mouth pork belly with crispy crackling had the perfect harmony of salty and sweet with the help of the candied apple served alongside. Again, there was lashings of celeriac puree and jus where you found yourself mopping it all up all over again. beef mignon

The lower north shore has been crying for a place like Wooden Spoon Bar & Restaurant to turn up. It has long cried for a snazzy little bar-come-restaurant to to serve up delectable cocktails and modern australian cuisine without having going south of the border.
